Dr.
Eric Kindwall, fondly known by many as the "Father of Hyperbaric
Medicine", passed away peacefully early today, one day after his 78th
birthday.
Dr.
Kindwall had been in a state of declining health since his diagnosis of
metastatic cancer in 2007 and recently transitioned to the care of a
hospice team. Eric is survived by his wife, Marilyn, and their daughter
Tara. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this time.
Marilyn
believes that his last few months were enriched from all the wonderful
letters he received from friends and colleagues across the globe. He
thoroughly enjoyed receiving them and re-reading them each day. It often
triggered a fond memory that he was able to share with her and they
would reminisce together. She is extremely grateful for these memories
and the extra time it gave her with Eric.
In
honor of his request, there will be no funeral or memorial services.
Instead Dr. Kindwall's ashes will be spread in his homeland of Sweden at
a later date.
Using the quote from the preface in his memoirs "Unexpected Odyssey":
...A flick of sunshine upon a strange shore, the time to remember, the
time for a sigh, and --- good-bye! --- Night --- Good-bye...! - Joseph Conrad
